Lifting on the home of the Airborne

The installation is Fort Bragg again. It was called Fort Liberty from June 2023 until February 2025, when the Defense Secretary renamed it for Pfc. Roland L. Bragg, a World War II paratrooper and Silver Star recipient. Older contracts and documents may still say Fort Liberty; both names mean the same post.

Fort Bragg sits along Fayetteville's northwest edge and spreads into Cumberland, Hoke, Harnett and Moore counties. It is headquarters for the XVIII Airborne Corps, the 82nd Airborne Division and U.S. Army Special Operations Command, and it also takes in Pope Army Airfield and Womack Army Medical Center. That mix means headquarters buildings, barracks, motor pools, hangars, training facilities and medical space, all of which eventually need something set on a roof or a pad.

Almost every crane pick inside the fence is done by a contractor working under a government contract or task order. Typical requests are packaged rooftop units and condensers, standby generators and switchgear, steel for maintenance and storage buildings, and modular offices or containers placed on gravel, where a rough terrain machine can beat a truck crane.

Off post, the work around the gates is mostly civilian: homes, apartments, churches and shopping centers in Fayetteville, Spring Lake and Hope Mills that grew up to house and serve soldiers and their families.

Getting a crane through the gate

The garrison's access control page sends all commercial and delivery vehicles through the Knox Street Truck Plaza, Visitor Control Center building K-1153. That covers the crane and its support trucks. Posted hours are 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. on weekends and federal holidays, so a weekend lift needs an early start.

Drivers are expected to show a bill of lading or invoice, a REAL ID-compliant license or another accepted ID, and every person in the vehicle goes through a background check before the vehicle is inspected. Contractors who need access for more than 24 hours go through their sponsor or contracting officer's representative using DES Form 118. The garrison's commercial delivery instructions (PDF) spell out the current steps. Gate numbers and procedures change, so confirm with your contracting office before lift day; a crane parked in an inspection lane is still billing.

Lift plans, EM 385-1-1 and the airfields

Military construction and repair contracts commonly require the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers safety manual, EM 385-1-1. It has detailed crane rules, including written plans for critical lifts. Tall booms near Pope Army Airfield or Simmons Army Airfield may also need airfield coordination before the pick.

If you are a prime or a sub, put the contract or project type in your request, for example "RTU swap, two-story barracks, main cantonment." A provider can then judge crane size, paperwork and how much time to budget at the truck plaza.

General information to help you plan. Your crane provider has the final word on equipment, safety and pricing for your specific lift.

Is it Fort Bragg or Fort Liberty?

Same installation. It was Fort Bragg until June 2023, Fort Liberty from June 2023 to February 2025, and Fort Bragg again since then, now honoring Pfc. Roland L. Bragg. Either name works in the quote form.

Where does a crane enter Fort Bragg?

The garrison's access page directs commercial and delivery vehicles to the Knox Street Truck Plaza, Visitor Control Center building K-1153. Check the current instructions and hours with your contracting office, because access rules can change quickly.

Do lifts on post need a written lift plan?

Often. Government construction contracts commonly invoke EM 385-1-1, which requires lift plans for critical lifts and may require them for others. Your contract documents and the provider's lift planner decide.

Do you take jobs just outside the gates?

Yes. Most requests from this area are off post, for homes, apartments, churches and businesses in Fayetteville, Spring Lake and Hope Mills. Enter the job ZIP code and describe the lift.
